Choosing a Three-Row for Winter in Hamburg, PA
For a winter in Hamburg and the Berks County roads around it, with a full family aboard, the three configurations worth driving are the 2027 Kia Telluride EX with all-wheel drive at $45,790, the Telluride Hybrid EX with all-wheel drive at $48,490, and the X-Pro SX at $53,690. All three carry the same 5,000-pound-class hardware, the same ten airbags and the same corrosion warranty; what separates them is ground clearance, tires and fuel economy. Which one you want depends on whether your winter is mostly I-78 at 6am, mostly unpaved lane, or mostly both.
We sell into five counties from one lot on South Fourth Street in Hamburg, and the winter questions we field are the same every year: will it get up Route 61 loaded, will the third row still be usable with a week of gear behind it, and what does the salt do to it by year six. Below is how the three answer those, using Kia's published figures rather than impressions.
Quick Answer
- All-wheel drive is a $2,000 step on the Telluride EX, gas or hybrid
- Ground clearance is 7.4 in on most trims and 9.1 in on the X-Pro
- Winter economy: 20 mpg combined gas AWD, 31 mpg combined hybrid AWD
- Corrosion cover runs 5 years or 100,000 miles against perforation
- Cargo behind the third row is 22.3 cu ft, so gear and seven seats coexist
What a Berks County Winter Actually Asks of a Three-Row
Four things, and only one of them is traction.
The first is grade. Route 61 climbs Blue Mountain north of the borough and US-209 runs the Carbon County side, and a loaded three-row on a wet grade needs torque low in the rev range rather than a big peak number. The 2027 Telluride holds 311 lb-ft flat from 1,700 rpm, which is the figure that does that work; the full engine picture is on the specifications page.
The second is clearance, and it matters at the end of the driveway more than on the road. Plowed snow piles at the apron, and the difference between 7.4 inches and the X-Pro's 9.1 is the difference between driving over that ridge and scraping it.
The third is visibility in bad light. A 199.2-inch vehicle in a salted parking lot at 5pm in January is where a Surround View Monitor stops being a luxury item; that camera and the Blind-Spot View Monitor both arrive at the SX, and the technology and safety page maps which trim carries what.
The fourth is corrosion, which is the one nobody asks about until year six. Roads here carry brine from December into March.
Three Tellurides That Answer It
Same body, same warranty, three different winters.
| Configuration | MSRP | Combined mpg | Ground clearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telluride EX AWD | $45,790 | 20 | 7.4 in |
| Telluride Hybrid EX AWD | $48,490 | 31 | 7.4 in |
| Telluride X-Pro SX | $53,690 | 19 | 9.1 in |
MSRP excludes the $1,545 destination and handling charge, taxes, title, license, options and dealer charges. Economy figures are EPA estimates (fueleconomy.gov).
The EX with all-wheel drive is the one most households here end up in. It runs the 274-horsepower turbo four, seats seven in second-row captain's chairs, and takes all-wheel drive as a $2,000 option. The trim comparison walks what each step above it buys.
The Hybrid EX with all-wheel drive costs $2,700 more than the gas EX and returns 31 mpg combined against 20, while making 329 horsepower rather than 274. On a daily run down US-222 toward Reading or east on I-78 to Allentown, that is the configuration that pays attention to a commute; the arithmetic is laid out on the Telluride Hybrid page.
The X-Pro SX is the one built for the surface rather than the distance. It carries 9.1 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels with more sidewall than the 20s and 21s elsewhere in the range, off-road-tuned dampers, front and rear recovery points and a standard tow hitch.
The Roads You Will Actually Drive
Three corridors carry most of this market's winter miles.
I-78 is the east to west spine between Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley, it carries heavy truck traffic, and it is where a long-legged three-row earns its economy figure. US-222 runs Allentown to Reading and on toward Lancaster, and it is the commute most of our Telluride buyers describe. North of the borough, Route 61 climbs toward Schuylkill County and US-209 crosses into Carbon County, and those are the roads where clearance and tire sidewall stop being spec-sheet lines.
Weekend traffic does not stop for the season either. Blue Marsh Lake stays busy with ice fishing and winter walking, and Cabela's at exit 30 is a year-round anchor. That is the pattern the 22.3 cubic feet behind the third row is really for: boots, bags and a dog, without folding a seat somebody is sitting in. The cargo and third row page has what fits at each seat position.
What Each One Gives You
The choice is about fit, and all three fit something specific.
Telluride EX AWD. The volume answer. Captain's chairs, 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, tri-zone climate, ten airbags and Highway Driving Assist as standard, with all-wheel drive for $2,000. It leaves budget on the table for winter tires, which is often the better spend.
Telluride Hybrid EX AWD. The commuter's answer. 31 mpg combined and 329 horsepower, with 637 miles of range on the front-drive version. If your winter is measured in highway miles rather than unpaved ones, this is the configuration that shows up in the fuel budget every month.
Telluride X-Pro SX. The surface answer. 9.1 inches of clearance, all-terrain tires and a Ground View Monitor that shows what is under the front wheels below 6 mph, which is genuinely useful on an unplowed lane. It stands 71.5 inches tall, so it is worth a tape measure against the garage door, and it tows 5,000 pounds properly equipped like every other gas trim. The towing page covers the hitch and the 500-pound tongue weight.
The Pick
Route by the winter you actually have.
- If you drive a highway commute and want the fuel bill to shrink, take the Telluride Hybrid EX with all-wheel drive at $48,490.
- If you want all-wheel drive and the best value in the range, take the Telluride EX with all-wheel drive at $45,790.
- If your driveway or your road goes unplowed, take the X-Pro SX at $53,690 for the clearance and the all-terrain tires.
- If you need an eighth seat more than you need all-wheel drive, the LX at $39,190 is the only Telluride that provides one.
What It Costs to Keep Through the Salt
Two service visits a year and a corrosion warranty that outlasts most ownership.
Kia runs the Telluride on one 7,500-mile cycle, oil and tire rotation on the same visit, which is twice a year on a typical commute here. The coverage behind it is 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain for the original owner, 5 years or 60,000 miles basic, and 5 years or 100,000 miles against perforation from rust. That last term is the one that matters on brined roads, and the maintenance and warranty page sets out what each one covers.
Winter Buying Questions
Do I need all-wheel drive for a Berks County winter?
All-wheel drive is a $2,000 option on the Telluride EX in either powertrain, and the trims from X-Line upward include it as standard. It is the most common winter specification we sell here, and it pairs with Terrain Mode's snow setting from the X-Line EX up.
How much does winter cost the Telluride's fuel economy?
The published gap between drive configurations is 2 mpg combined on the gas car, at 22 with front-wheel drive against 20 with all-wheel drive, and 4 mpg on the hybrid, at 35 against 31 (fueleconomy.gov).
Which Telluride has the most ground clearance?
The X-Pro SX and X-Pro SX Prestige, at 9.1 inches against 7.4 for the rest of the range. Both also carry all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels.
Will the third row still be usable with winter gear aboard?
There are 22.3 cubic feet behind the third row on the gas Telluride, which is space available with all seven seats occupied. Fold the third row for 48.7 cubic feet.
What safety technology helps most in bad weather?
The Surround View Monitor and the Blind-Spot View Monitor, both of which start at the SX. Forward Collision Warning, High Beam Assist and Smart Cruise Control with stop and go are standard on every trim including the LX.
How often will it need servicing over a winter?
Kia's schedule runs every 7,500 miles, with the oil and filter change and the tire rotation on one visit, then 15,000, 22,500, 30,000 and every 7,500 miles after.
Can I still tow with the winter setup?
Yes. All ten gas trims are rated at 5,000 pounds properly equipped and all five hybrids at 4,500 pounds, with a 500-pound maximum tongue weight. A hitch is standard on both X-Pro trims.
Where can I compare these in person near Reading or Allentown?
At our lot at 900 South Fourth Street in Hamburg, one exit off I-78. We stock both powertrains, so a gas EX and a hybrid EX can be driven back to back on the same visit. More answers sit on the Telluride FAQ page, and the full 2027 Telluride overview covers the range end to end.
Drive One Before the Weather Turns
The three configurations above are on the lot now, and the useful hour is the one where you drive a gas EX and a hybrid EX back to back on the same road. Bring the car seats and the gear you actually carry; the third row and the load floor tell you more in ten minutes than any figure on this page. Every guide we have published on this vehicle is collected on the 2027 Telluride research hub.
