Seltos LX

Starting MSRP $24,990 front-wheel drive, $26,690 with all-wheel drive, excluding the $1,495 destination charge. Available engine: the 2.0-liter Atkinson four making 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft, through the Intelligent Variable Transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is a $1,700 step.

The LX is the only Seltos on 16-inch alloys, wearing 205/65R16 tires. That is the tallest sidewall in the range by a wide margin, and it is a genuine advantage rather than a cost saving to apologise for: on the secondary roads across Berks and Schuylkill counties after a freeze-thaw spring, a 65-series tire absorbs impacts that a 45-series sends into the wheel. The LX also has the lowest roofline at 63.0 inches without rails and 7.5 inches of ground clearance, with a 17.7-degree approach angle.

The S is the first step onto 18-inch alloys and 215/55R18 tires, and it lifts ground clearance to 7.9 inches with an 18.7-degree approach angle. It stands 63.4 inches tall without roof rails. The paint palette opens up here: Pale Gray at $445, Frost Blue with a black roof at $545, and Snow White Pearl at $445.

Who it is for: the buyer who wants the bigger-wheel stance and the extra half-inch of clearance without moving up to the EX's equipment, and who is happy to spend $1,400 over an LX to get it.

Seltos EX

The EX is the top of the 2.0-liter ladder and the only trim offered the $1,500 Sunroof Package, which brings a panoramic sunroof with an LED rear reading light, black roof rails and a heated steering wheel. It is also the only trim Kia publishes both ways on height: 64.6 inches without roof rails and 64.8 inches with them. With the sunroof fitted, front headroom measures 38.5 inches and rear headroom 37.7 inches.

Because X-Line is all-wheel drive only, it always gets the independent multi-link rear suspension rather than the torsion beam the front-drive cars use. It also gets the monotone black interior with SynTex upholstery and Telluride-inspired mesh headrests, plus four-way lumbar support.

The $2,000 X-Line S Premium Package is the single biggest content step in the lineup: a panoramic sunroof with LED rear reading light, a height-adjustable smart power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch integrated ccNC Lite display, a 5-inch climate display, a 4-inch instrument cluster display, dual-zone full automatic climate control, an auto defog system and rear air-conditioning vents. It rides on 19-inch alloys with 235/45R19 tires, has the highest ground clearance in the range at 8.1 inches, the best approach angle at 18.9 degrees and a 27.2-degree departure angle. It stands 65.0 inches tall with roof rails, and it is the heaviest Seltos at 3,549 to 3,715 pounds.
